Constantia Flexibles and Plasthill reduce packaging weight for greater durability
Plasthill, a manufacturer of high-end technical films and packaging based in Hillegom, the Netherlands, and Austrian flexible packaging manufacturer Constantia Flexibles, are combining their expertise to bring the more environmentally friendly films to the market on an industrial scale. Pim Vervaat, CEO of Constantia Flexibles said, “The technology behind the CompresSeal film is the result of years of research and development by our experts. Together with Plasthill’s industry-leading embossing capabilities, we are taking this advanced packaging solution to the next level and offering it to customers in a wide range of packaging applications.”
A partnership to further improve flexible packaging
CompresSeal technology consists of a new and special micro embossing technology. Thanks to the innovative embossing pattern, the gram weight of polyolefin seal films can be reduced by up to 30%, while remaining as thick as standard packaging. Thus, the carbon footprint of a given packaging specification can also be reduced.
In addition, the technology reduces the problems associated with migrating slip additives commonly used in the PE and PP film industry. Thus, fewer additives can be used and the coefficient of friction on the packaging line remains constant regardless of environmental conditions, such as temperature and humidity. This also results in higher production speeds. The innovative packaging solution is particularly suitable for use in flow packs for detergents, dry pet food, coffee, nuts, savory foods, as well as in stand-up pouches for liquids..
Initially, the focus will be on polyethylene sealants in thicknesses greater than 60 grams per square meter, where weight reduction has the greatest environmental impact.
Sander Kool, Managing Director at Plasthill Technical Films: “Our proposition is ‘The sustainable innovator’ and producing these new films is completely in line with our Rethink Plastics strategy. The collaboration and teamwork with Constantia Flexibles has turned out great!”
